Thermohaline Mixing In Low-Mass Red Giants

We present the results of our 2D and 3D numerical simulations of thermohaline convection in low-mass red giant branch (RGB) stars. This convection is driven by the double-diffusive instability associated with the inversion of the mean molecular weight distribution caused by the reaction 3He(3He,2p)4He in the vicinity of the hydrogen burning shell.
